About the Friends

The Friends of Rondebosch Common (FRC) are the Common’s community custodians. Founded in 1991, the Friends are dedicated to conserving this unique area of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos.

Our slogan is: "Rondebosch Common: Small enough to Care for; Big enough to Count"

The FRC are affiliate members of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa’s (WESSA). We subscribe to the Friends programme of WESSA Western Cape Region

As one of Cape Town’s longest-running community conservation organisations, the Friends play an active role in supporting and undertaking management and conservation work on the Common in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Parks Department and other key stakeholders. A key example of this is the innovative Rondebosch Common Restoration Project.

Education and raising awareness about the Common, with its wondeful biodiversity and unique cultural history, is at the heart of the work of the Friends. Members receive regular newsletters with complementary copies also distributed to local schools.

During the spring season the Friends run a series of free spring walks that are open to all, guided by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers.
